You might think that you’re visiting Paris to see monuments like the Eiffel Tower and the Arc du Triomphe, to eat delicious food like croissants, baguettes, pain au chocolats, escargots, and crepes, or to see famous art at the Musee d’Orsay or the Louvre. You might think that Lafayette is just a fancy department store. But really, Lafayette was a young French immigrant who helped Americans to victory during the American Revolution! Beyond the surface of what you see lies the secrets of the history of the American Revolution. Did you know that Paris also has a deep history with the American Revolution? If you were walking through Trocadero, you might be looking at the Eiffel Tower. But if you follow this guide, we’ll take you to the hidden secrets of the American Revolution. We will show you the hidden monuments from this Revolution all over the 16ème arrondissement.
In other walking tour guides they might teach you about the usual tourist sites of Paris, but in this walking tour guide you will learn about the fascinating history of the friendship of the Americans and the French during the American Revolution. Written by a fourth grade class at the American School of Paris, this walking tour guide will lead you out of the world of the sparkling Eiffel Tower and back in time to the 18th century and the thrilling and dangerous world of the American Revolution. A time when armies used muskets and bayonets. A time when women secretly fought in the war. A time when the Marquis de Lafayette led French soldiers in Yorktown to victory. A time when spies snuck information to other sides. A time when it took nearly a month to travel from Europe to the colonies. A time when other countries led the colonies to defeat the greatest military in the world.
This walking tour guide is made up of nine stops. Follow the map and you will visit nine different monuments and statues of Americans and French leaders who supported the American Revolution. At each stop, read the chapters related to the stop. In the chapters, you will read all about writing that teaches you the history of these people, essays that explain their importance, stories that bring you into their world, and timelines that teach you the history of these people and their roles in the war. You will also see illustrations that highlight important details. The final section is dedicated to missing statues, important people who were heroes to the American Revolution but who don’t have statues in Paris. We wanted to highlight their stories, too.
We hope that you enjoy this walking tour and that through it you will learn about the important friendship between France and America during the American Revolution--a friendship that changed the world!
