Statue of De Grasse by Olivier

You are now standing in front of the De Grasse statue in the 16ème arrondissement. Look all around. Look at DeGrasse being like a leader. Look at his teammates helping him get his fleet out. A fleet is a group of ships who were going to battle. In this station, I will tell you all about DeGrasse. If you want to know about him, keep reading. I will tell you about Degrasse and his French Navy. Keep looking at the statue because when I get to some important information, like when Cornwallis was caught by Degrasse, or in my essay on why he was important, you’ll want to be looking at the statue. You’ll read a lot of important things like what he did. For example, he went to Yorktown and blocked the harbor, catching Cornwallis. This statue shows a man who helped the Americans beat the British.

Part 1 who was de Grasse?

Hey you guys, have you ever heard of De Grasse? If not, well he was like the boss of the French Navy. In this book, I am going to tell you all about De Grasse. If you want to know let’s get right into it.

First, I am going to tell you about what he did. Well, what he did was he built fleets for the French navy. He also helped the soldiers to fight, but he stayed in the background if the soldiers were about to be defeated. After this book I am going to tell you all kinds of stories that happened to de grasse .

He also fought in Yorktown and he helped beat the British soldiers.De Grasse joined Rochembeau, a boss of the French army, and George Washington, the boss of the American army to surrender Cornwallis surrender. The difference between the French army and French navy is that the navy is on ships and the army is on land.

If De Grasse hadn’t gone to Yorktown, British would never have learned a lesson and Cornwallis would have escaped. Cornwallis was the general of the British army in Yorktown. I think that we should say thank you to De Grasse for all that work. In part 2 I will teach you about the trap to get Cornwallis to give up.

Part 2 DeGrasse volunteers To fight at Yorktown

Today I am going to tell you all about when De Grasse volunteered at Yorktown.Don’t you want to know? Well let's get right into it fast.

Another example is when Rochambeau, a friend of De Grasse, asked him to go to Yorktown with 24 ships and 3,000 soldiers. Of course De Grasse would do that for a friend and because they were a team even if they worked for different jobs for the French. When they got to Yorktown they saw Cornwallis was escaping,so they had to do something to stop him.

After that De Grasse yelled, “Allez, les captures!” The soldiers got down as fast as they could, but Cornwallis got past them. De grasse had to do something, so he yelled, “Continuez!” and he said, “I will go too!” So, he went running as fast as he could and he tackled Cornwallis and captured him. That meant the French won because they had to capture Cornwallis and they did.

De Grasse was incredible at Yorktown. He saved Yorktown because if he hadn’t stopped Cornwallis Yorktown would be taken over by the British. But no! He beat the British and he stopped Cornwallis by blocking the harbor. If the Americans didn’t have De Grasse they would be destroyed.

Part 3 a story about a little kid named Olivier in the battle of Yorktown with De Grasse

I was in my room right there in Yorktown and then I heard a fleet. I didn't know who it was but then I saw De Grasse. It was the French navy I had heard that they were going to fight us in war

I had heard about french navy with De Grasse in it then I saw something happen. Cornwallis was trying to escape so then I saw DeGrasse with his fleet blocking the harbor so that Cornwallis wouldn’t escape. Then I thought to myself, “I should go talk to De Grasse but then I said ahh dang he only speaks French.” but I knew I could make the best of where I was going.

Then he said to me something like this, “Bonjour petit tu voudrais quoi”I. So I just shrugged and he said, “Tu parle anglais?” I couldn’t understand, but I think he said, “You speak English?” So, I said”, “Yes” And then I said, “You like the English?”. And he said, “No, I am here to fight the English so you can leave because we are getting ready for war. So, I left but I thought to myself that wasn't very nice of him to say that.

Part 4 An essay why was De Grasse important

Hey you guys after all this book I am gonna tell you why de grasse was important let's get right into it.

One reason he was important is when De Grasse went to Yorktown. DeGrasse blocked the harbor one example is first that would make English sad, because the English had to make Cornwallis escape and that would make him be stopped and second Cornwallis couldn’t escape if he did that.

Another reason is De Grasse was important because he stopped Cornwallis from escaping. One example is if he had escaped Britain would have taken over Yorktown but he didn’t escape. and another example is when he stopped Cornwallis he saved Yorktown. Because he stopped. Cornwallis and Britain would take over if Cornwallis would escape.

My last reason why he was important is he was a hero for the french navy. one example is if he didn’t build those fleets the french navy wouldn’t be able to take over the war. And another example is without his fleets french navy wouldn’t be able to get to places as fast as they could. With his fleets so for me french navy learned a lesson from de grasse. So they should say thank you to De Grasse.

In conclusion.de grasse was so important. And I am realizing that if it wasn't for De Grasse Cornwallis, would have escaped. And Yorktown would be taken over and De Grasse wouldn’t be who he is and that is why De Grasse was important.
